Grooming your Lhasa Apso
Brushing: Tibetan dogs have a dubblecoated hair dress, which consists of fine underwool and firm cover hair. The cover hair is very similar in appearance and pH value to the human hair. This cover hair receives the Lhasa Apso only with the change of the puppy coat. First firm of hair come through usually between the shoulders. If one from the outset (even if one means, which are hair still not at all for a long time) the dog to combing accustoms, is not the care late very long hair a problem. It depends only on the regularity.
One proceeds as follows: Best we put the dog on a table (a good place is also the washing machine!) a not-slipping underlay and put the dog laterally on it. I always use thereby the same instruction-Peng-?, that is, the dog must remain lying now. The hair is easily moistened now with an atomizer, so that the hair does not break when brushing. The atomizer is water-filled with distilled, a hair lotion for dogs (Conditioner) is attached to it. Beginning upward combed by the belly. One draws transverse vertices again and again and combs so the individual layers. The paws are treated in the same way. If small mates are found, these are carefully dissolved with the comb. We should hold the hair over the skin, so that we do not do pain to the dog. In no case on the hair pull too firmly, it breaks otherwise. The preferential places formating are behind the ears and under the shoulders. If mats are formed nevertheless, briefly with care lotion to moisten, something up influence let and with the fingers pull apart, afterwards with the comb. For the eyes I use a small comb, in order to remove dried up eye secretion, equally thereby leftovers can be removed. With increasing hair length a vertex on the back, which emphasizes the long hair particularly beautifully, forms. Lhasa Apso puppy require more care, than an adult Lhasa, since the fine puppy hair felts faster. An adult Lhasa is through-brushed in to twice per week thoroughly.
Eyes: To the daily care the cleaning of the eyes belongs. The eye internal angles are cleaned either with a dampened cotton wool PAD or released with a fine comb from secretion remainders. Cut in no case the hair around the eyes, which would irritate regenerating hair the eyes, the Lhasa Apso have long lashes, which keep the eyes free.
Ears: Once per week the ears are cleaned. In addition one uses an ear cleaning agent of the veterinary surgeon. Hair in the gehoergang is carefully out-pulled with the fingers, in order to avoid infections. No fear, the dog does that not to pain.
Claws and Paws: Every few weeks the claws should be shortened . In addition one uses special claw pliers. You must be very careful, in order to hurt no supplied with blood part of the claw. The 5. Claw at the inside of the front runs is likewise shortened, so that it cannot in-grow. You can best be shown the first time of the breeder or an experienced dog owner, how the claw part is removed. Also between the bundles and toes the hair growing is very strong, the hair must be kept short there, since dirt settles there and to inflammations they can-accustom it to come their dog on to these measures.
Bathing: Never brush or comb a dirty or matted coat dry. Depending upon contamination our Lhasa Apso is bathed. Otherwise we bath every 2 weeks. In addition I use a good dog shampoo with a following care flushing; which improves and protects the hair structure. It’s very important to get all the hair wet before you apply shampoo – sometimes the coat resists water, and you find dry patches when you put the shampoo on. Use warm water (not hot or cool), and when the dog is completely wet, work the Shampoo in gently, moving your hands down from the top, never rubbing in circles or an up and down motion. Put the dog in a large bath-towel, the dog is expressed and dried may vibrate itself, afterwards it. The hair is brushed and blowed at the same time. Before it is however completely dry, it is thoroughly through-brushed. In cold weather the dog should not go outside, before it is perfectly dry. After a walk in bad weather or if our Lhasa meant, it must loosen the garden up, we showers only the paws and the belly off and removes any wood remainders, or also annoying grass seeds from the coat. There are some products that you should NOT use, such as those with silicone in them, heavy thick oils that clog up the skin and hair-spray with lacquer in it that dries the hair and makes it break. Too much bathing with harsh shampoos will dry the coat and make it brittle and easy to mat. I like the “enzyme” products which are safe and non-toxic, not a soap with sulpher in it, but completely natural and protective of the hair and skin.
Haircut: The Lhasa Apso only is the typical picture with his long, beautiful coat. If you go with him more often intoi woods you can cut his hair a little, but never shave him completely. If you want to show your Lhasa Apso on Dog Shows, do not cut his hair. I only cut thin tips and hair, which is longer than the bottom. If your Lhasa is not groomed for a long time and you think its not possible to demating him, ask your breeder, he has the right instructions for you to save the coat.
